Hi!

A little about me, Stephan Kesting, the super-serious and totally not pretentious author of Perseverance, Life and Death in the Subarctic.

My Story

I'm an adventurer, jiu-jitsu practitioner, and firefighter. These activities all require making critical decisions under pressure, which is one of the central themes I write about.

My online presence is bifurcated between my martial arts channels and my outdoor channels.

​

On the martial arts front, I've been training in the martial arts since age 12. I've trained in Judo, Kung Fu, Kajukenbo Karate, Jun Fan / JKD, Sambo, Indonesian Silat, Phillippino Kali, and am currently a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Tens of thousands of people have read my books, taken my courses, and watched my Youtube videos.

In the outdoors I've criss-crossed the North for 40 years. I've done many solo trips into the Arctic and have worked as a canoe and raft guide, safely leading large groups in the remote wilderness.

​

My academic background is a BSc in Biology with a minor in Environmental Studies from McGill and an MSc in Arctic Botany with a specialisation in climate change from UBC. I worked as a field biologist for seven years, which deepened and informed my relationship with the natural world.

​

When not on the mats, in a canoe or in front of a typewriter I work as a captain in the fire service. In 2001, I received the National Medal of Bravery for rushing into a burning warehouse to save two trapped firefighters.

​

I'm very excited to share my latest book, Perseverance, Life and Death in the Subarctic, with you. It's the story of, and lessons learned from, a 1,000 mile solo journey through some of the most remote terrain on the planet after a kidney transplant.
